South Australian Living Afficianados

Francis and Putu in Burra are putting on an exhibition of an unusual type during SALA this year. Instead of showing the new work of a particular artist, they are showing the work artist's own. We have donated our Keren Seelander painting to the casue.

Francis asked me to create the invitation. See below.

Art 'n' Stuff

On the exhibition front I’ve had the exhibition at McLaren Vale but I’ve also had pictures in the regular Artist’s Voice exhibitions at the Hahndorf Academy. Nothing has sold from there so far but perhaps the Christmas exhibition will present an opportunity to move some stock. I also have a new website where you can purchase my work as cards, poster, prints of various sorts and calendars! Check it out at . . .

The calendar that is available of my photography - 'Flowers and Foliage'

At the end of February I will be presenting an exhibition of new work at the Rising Sun in Kensington – the same venue I presented the exhibition ‘Detours Re-routed’ in September 2007. Part of the Fringe, it will be listed in the guide and I hope you can all come along.

A pictorial conversation

As we speak (Well, as we speak virtually - I type, you read), three of my works are hanging in the Kapunda Community Gallery and they are having a conversation.

They are; 'The Red Room' , a canvas 75cm across by 100cm tall previously exhibited at the Tin Cat Cafe; 'Adelaide Skyline', an A4 print on glossy paper; and 'Adelaide Townhouse', an A4 print on glossy paper.

Shall we listen in as they recount the day just past? Yes, let's.

The Red Room "Skyline, Townhouse! Listen to me, listen to me. Did you see how that couple looked at me today? I don't mind being admired but this couple scrutinised me from every angle. Their gaze was so intense I felt my picture squirm. Couldn't help it, I think it moved.
Skyline: "I know what you mean The Red Room. You get some creepy inspections in galleries - makes your stomach churn sometimes. Oi Townhouse, did you see The Red Room's creepy couple?"
Townhouse: "Yes, I saw them giving you the once over Red Room and then a bit. It may not be as it seems, you know, they may want to adopt you and put you on their own wall. Eventually it's either new homes or it's off to storage . . . or worse . . . you know."
The Red Room: "What are you saying? New home! My creator wouldn't do that."
Skyline: "Oooo! Canvas doesn't know the facts of life. Thinks he's all special. What airs."
Townhouse: "Be nice Skyline. Break it to him gently."

A muffled scream is heard followed by a loud tuneless 'thwack'.

Skyline: "He's fallen off the wall. Poor sot couldn't take the truth."
Townhouse: " Yes. All that rubbish about the creator taking care of him. Just not going to happen, is it?"
Skyline: "I hope he didn't hurt himself."
Townhouse: "No use worrying now. What can we do?"
Skyline: "Just hang about I suppose."
Townhouse: " They'll pick him up, dust him off and he'll be as good as new."
Skyline: "Do you think he was knocked out."
Townhouse: "I expect so. He fell from quite a height but he's made of strong stuff."
Skyline: "So what are your plans for tomorrow? Just hang about I suppose."
Townhouse: "Yep. Smell the air. Watch the diurnal play of light on the walls. Day Dream. You know. Just hang."
Shyline: "Yep, Just hang."

Portraits of Townhouse and Skyline below. For The Red Room click on the art tag and you'll eventually find him, poor impressionable chappie.

Blog tags

I've added tags to each of the entries. They appear at the bottom of each entry and are words in orange sparated by a comma. They can be used as a way of sorting the blog. So, if you want to look at all the entries to do with the kitchen renovation click on the 'kitchen' or 'renovation' tag at the bottom of one of the entries. Then a page will be produced that has all the entries about the kitchen together on the one page.

Exhibitionism VII

The exibition has come to a close. I sold 5 out of the 15 pieces I had on display - 6 if you count the one I sold before the exhibition - and 7 if you count the one sold today after it has closed. So, if you're interested, the pieces that are left for sale include the canvases of 'Apocalypse on Rundle',' Pegs' and 'The Red Room'. The watercolour and photos of 'Apocalypse on Rundle' are left but not the entirely photographic one. And the photo 'Chairs' is left, and that's about it. The photos are of the pictures as they appeared in the Tin Cat Cafe. I tried to avoid reflections and lens distortion and lighting problems in depicting the exhibition but that wasn't always successful. Anywho, I hope you like the pictures.

Exhibitionism VI

Six Appeal, the art exhibition I'm participating in, opened last Wednesday - November 8. We each had, more or less, a room for our own work. I had 15 items displayed plus my budget Fridge Art series (see list in previous 'Exhibitionism' post). The opening went well. Lots of people came through and the wine ran out pretty quickly. David and I took some photos during the night.

They are of:
Dining at the Tin Cat Cafe once the exhibition had been opened. From the left and round the table is David, Malcolm, Terry, Francis, Putu, Keith, Gary, Heather, Dani, Bruce and Will.
Fanny Jacobsen opening the exhibition. Fanny is artistic director of the Feast Festival.
Me, Michael, Ann and their son Thomas in front of 'On Reflection . . .'
Kenneth (centre) with Mandi on the right and her Mum on the left.
Francis in conversation upstairs in the formal gallery space.
Out in the courtyard with the dwindling wine supply.

Exhibitionism V

Here are the pictures of the hanging at the Tin Cat. No, not a scaffold, large lynching tree or yardarm in sight. The only thing that was hung was the artwork. They would have been included in the last post but the batteries went flat on my camera and the spares proved to be flat also. Pictures are of David at work on the walls and Alan and John upstairs busily hanging Alan's artwork.

Exhibitionism IV

The picture above is of me with a pile of my pictures ready to be transported to the gallery. Seeing I've called this series of blog posts 'Exhibitionism' I thought I'd add a bit of the real thing into the mix.

I got hung today. My 'artwork' for the exhibition went up on the walls at the Tin Cat Cafe. I've got the back room which has worked out well as that room is quite large and airy, and as my pieces are large and colourful they get a lift from the space and the light. The walls are white in that room too, which helps. David did most of the technical hanging work. We had some wonderful assisstance from Kelly who is an artist. She arrived with Marlene, who was down from Quorn. Kelly really helped us with getting all the pieces sorted and looking good on the walls. It was great too that Marlene could see the work. Some of the stuff features pictures from around Quorn.

I've seen everyone else's work now, and it's all spectacular. It's all just beautiful.

Gary has taken illustrations from old books, like the Readers Digest, and makes them into lovely retro-looking collages that tell a new story. Keith, a photographer, has taken the most beautiful pictures of men and paired them with a texture picture like flowers or a fabric in romantic sepia tones. Mark has taken some photos of Sydney beaches and subjected them to a 3-D technique with gives the most wonderful illusion. Alan is the most traditional of all, he uses oils. His canvases are dark and feature intense reds and yellows - it's all very volcanic and passionate. Heather has taken some intimate photos and they're small so you need to get close and LOOK. Her other series is a number of words embroidered onto photo rag in gold and they look sensational. I'm in remarkable company. I hope they like my stuff! I wouldn't want to be letting the side down.

Below is the list of my alleged 'artworks'. Alleged as it's up to others to credit them with that status not me. I just made some pictures.

Exhibitionism II

In between the swimming, the running, the cycling, eating David's wonderous meals, sleeping, not watching a second of television and work, I have been making stuff for an exhibition at the Tin Cat Cafe which opens in just a short while - on November 8. I've made all the stuff; nearly. There's just some framing and other bibs and bobs type jobs to do. The photos below show the frames which need to be filled with pictorial material and the canvases which are all ready to go. Also there's a picture of some of the smaller works I'm doing - Original Fridge Art. They're postcard-sized pictures with fridge magnets on the back. The pictures are on art paper and are of archival quality. I hope someone buys them! While I may have a first and a last exhibition, I'd rather them not to be the one and the same.

Click on the pictures. They open up larger in another window.

Exhibitionism

As some of you may know I will be taking part in a group art exhibition in November as part of Adelaide’s Feast Festival.

I have been working on a range of images for the past six months or so. All of them use my own photography but each image is actually a collage merging several different images, sometimes fairly obviously, sometimes quite subtly (I hope). It has been a love affair between my lovely Fujifilm camera, our iMac and Adobe’s Design collection. We’ve all worked so happily together. Only the occasional fights, freezings and crashes and burns.

Yesterday I picked up three photos that had been printed on canvas from the laboratory. The pictures look great. Unfortunately, there were ripples in the stretching of each one and one was placed on the frame in the wrong position. So they go back tomorrow – hopefully to be stretched properly this time.

The exhibition will be held at the Tin Cat Café and Gallery, 107 Rundle Street, Kent Town. It opens on Wednesday, November 8, 6-8pm. It will be called Six appeal as it involves six artists. Viewing times will be Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 4pm and Wednesday – Saturday 6pm till late.

Below some details from the bigger pictures. You’ll have to come to the exhibition to see the whole images. Click on the images to see them larger in a new window. Press the back button to return to the blog.
